My Final Statement of intent.

Statement of intent:

I have chosen to use the song Cherry Bomb by The Runaways, a song which the band released in 1976 and still today is seen as one of the most empowering feminist songs to date. The song incorporates taboo subjects, such as promiscuity and the idea of a teenager standing up to her parents to suggest that they need to accept her for wow she is or do not accept her at all. I think this is very fitting for my music video, because a lot of young women may relate to it, this will attract the desired demographic of socially conscious 16-25-year olds from the middle to upper market. In addition, I think it is an important subject to talk about or shed light onto, as so many women young- or old- are criticized for their behaviour or the way they act, yet if a man was the do the exact same things he wouldn’t be criticized, in fact he may even be praised. Therefore, this video is to show that young woman no longer want to be restricted by societies double standards, which is what I believe The Runaways were trying to achieve.

In my video I will be including two different social groups. The first group will be young teenagers aged 16-18, female and male and the second social group will be the generation that will be those teenagers’ parent so adult around 48-55. I think as interesting factor to incorporate will be to make the parents religious, as often religious parents are synonymous of being more protective or strict about their children behaviour. However, if I feel this factor does not fit in well with my video or detracts from the feminist message then I won’t include it in the video. Instead I will just show that the parents are strict by maybe taking the girls phone away or giving her an unrealistic curfew. My aim will to create a power dynamic in which the girl has more dominance than her parents, even if the parents don't see it that way.

In terms of locations for the video, I will aim to use a wall with graffiti, as I think this nicely captures the essence of teenagers wanting to be rebellious and is a location which I feel shows that the protagonist doesn’t conform to society’s expectations of how a young woman should behave. Secondly, I think a shot of the protagonist in front of a mirror putting on make-up (red lipstick) will be a really nice shot, as it could show her trying to make herself appear more sensual or it could suggest she is  getting ready to go out without her parents permission. In addition, red lipstick is often used to symbolise confidence or confidence can be shown as result of putting on red lipstick, it can also be ‘symbol of prowess’, and can be used to show assertion in a woman.

One aspect of intertextuality I would aim to include will be the costume of Cherie Currie, the lead singing of The Runaways, which is a pink/white corset lingerie piece. However, I don’t think many people would feel comfortable preforming in my music video wearing that so I will try and modernise the costume by which could be a corseted bodysuit and some ripped trousers with fishnet nights underneath. I think this will appeal to the audience as most of them will be aware of the original music video and it captures the essence of the original music video but with a modern take on it. Furthermore, the original music is performative so it just shows the band on stage performing the song and therefore I would like to use intertextuality by having some shots of someone playing a guitar or bass, if that is not possible I would like to have some shots of the main protagonist watching the music video whilst getting ready.

On my Website I will aim to ensure synergy with the music video and branding with the aesthetic theme of Red and Black. I will do this by using a red font and a black background across the majority of the two pages and I will aim to create an album cover for the song that fits this aesthetic. The bands logo will also be red and black to ensure branding is the same across all aspects of production and so it is in line with the theme of my website. The idea behind red and black will be to emphasise the alternative rock aspect of the song Cherry Bomb and the music video that goes with it. Purely Red the bands itself incorporates the word red and therefore it is fitting that the rest of my Website and font colour match this. I will also include a short audio visual element in my website to promote the bands new song and I will do this is the form of a short interview or a Q&A with one of the band members. This website will attract my socially aware demographic of 16-25 year olds as it will conform to modern expectations of what a bands website should look like and it will have a modern clean cut finish.
