System Of A Down - Boom! - YouTube
The song boom! By system of a down is a song and a video protesting the American-iraq war over oil in 2003. Millions of people all over the world protested on the streets for peace and for there not to be a war. Despite this the war still went ahead but even so the song still hold relevance today over criticism of any war and their governments involved.

In the music video all the shots are of people at the protests or ariel shots of all the people across the world protesting. This was very powerful as it shows the people behind the protests and the rallies. What was even more effective was the people lip-syncing the lyrics for the song which shows the connection between the message of the song and everyone who wanted peace to avail.During the video they shot loads of shots of many different cities and how many people were at the protest. This draws attention the mass of people there and how many people were for peace and not war, which further shows how the government don’t care for or listen to the people they are just greedy for money.

One very hard-hitting lyrics was 4000 hungry children leave us per hour from starvation
While billions are spent on bombs, creating death showers!’, this made a connection with the innocence of children and the fact that they are getting killed because of greed for money and oilThe criticism was very direct, with clips of people mocking president bush by wearing masks of his face and dancing and of the cartoon at the end with the face of the leaders involved sitting on the bombs flying in the sky mocking them. This then followed with each bomb hitting a cloud which was shaped as the world peace symbol but each time the symbol still remained suggesting that peace will always win. The animation of this clip was appeared very childish with the bright colours and simple animation which I think draw a link to the minds of the leaders suggesting they are small mined like a child’s perhaps or simple minded. This is because a child does not think of the consequence of their actions much like the leaders.

‘Every time you drop the bomb ,You kill the God your child has born’ this lyric also shows how people may claim to be Christian but do not care about the loves of the innocent children they might be killing during the war. The use of the personal pronoun ‘you’ also makes it very personal and put the blame and responsibility of the actions on all the people involved so people cannot escape the responsibility of their actions and consequences.

  1. You have clearly grasped the meaning of the song and picked up on some great elements of the video. Could you be a little more detailed with your referencing to media language use - referring to specific shot types, editing, mise-en-scene? Miss Cook :)
